Joseph Onigbinde

Dr. Onigbinde is the founder and medical director of Ropheka Medical and Dental Clinic located in the Akowonjo suburban area of Lagos, Nigeria. He is a 1985 graduate of the University of Lagos with a degree in dentistry, and he completed his residency training in Oral Pathology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital. There, he served on the faculty as a teacher of Oral Pathology and as a research assistant at the University of Lagos Dental School.

In 1990, Dr. Onigbinde left Lagos to pursue his MS in Biomedical Sciences at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium. While there, he worked under UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot on the development of new strategies for HIV diagnosis. Since 1992, Dr. Onigbinde has been actively involved in HIV/AIDS Control Programs in Nigeria, in addition to operating a successful private dental practice from 1992-2005.

In 2003, the doctor was selected as an International Visitor and the sole representative from Nigeria to the US Department of State’s Multi-Regional Project on HIV/AIDS and Infectious Diseases. In 2007, he received his MPH in International Community Health from NYU. He has been honored with awards from various organizations for his ongoing work in the promotion of health care in Nigeria.
