Leadership Corp | About Us
Our Vision: The Leadership Corps will be recognized in the international health services community, with volunteers, and global partners, as effectively enhancing health services management capacity in underserved areas.

Welcome to the Leadership Corps website and thank you for visiting!  The vision of the Leadership Corps is to improve the quality of life in communities of developing countries through enhanced health services and better health outcomes.  We plan to do so by working effectively with others in building health services management capacity in underserved areas of the world.  We will do this through teams of experienced healthcare leaders who will volunteer their services.  The Leadership Corps is a nonprofit organization.

Our  objective is to engage in a partnership-mentoring relationship.  The short term goal is to bolster management and leadership capacity. The long term goal of the Leadership Corps is to enhance health services and create better health outcomes in resource limited settings by building management capacity.  The volunteer experience consists of training, matching with an NGO partner (based on needs and capabilities), and spending 1-3 months per year in country, working side-by-side with indigenous administrators to build managerial and leadership capacity through the teaching of specific management competencies. When not in country, the relationship will be maintained and supported using whatever technology is available.   In a respectful environment, communication will develop, and the distance can be bridged by trust.

Many developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, are in desperate need of improving the managerial capacity of their senior and mid-level public health workforce. Health systems in these countries have an acute shortage of the right people in the right places. Additionally, health systems lack people who have “hard” management skills as well as people who have the managerial competencies to match their responsibilities. Consequently, health systems under-function and health programs have suboptimal outcomes.

Volunteers in the Leadership Corps will be recruited from the growing cadre of retired and semi-retired health care managers in the U.S.   We offer a dependable, safe and high-impact experience for our volunteers, dedicated to improving the quality of life in developing countries. Our recent activities include: interest testing at the American College of Healthcare Executives Annual Congress.   Those results, combined with earlier testing results of the American Public Health Association, demonstrate a strong interest in both twinning projects and volunteer leadership opportunities.  In April, we made some staffing changes and, in May, we updated the Clinton Global Initiative, opened communications with stakeholders and other interested parties, began modifying materials, searching out grant opportunities, and actively engaging in other necessary, but not noteworthy, activities.

We plan on launching our first round of training and pilot project in 2012. Kenya is scheduled to be our pilot with a team of 20 volunteers in 10 organizations serving 5 or more communities of approximately 50,000 people.   Initially, we will measure the impact of the volunteer’s work in four key areas: Workforce productivity; Resource productivity (budget management, use of supplies, adaption and use of technology); Management competency of line managers; Access to and capacity of services.

By the end of year two, we will have modified the operation based on lessons learned during the pilot and will measure the resourcefulness of the NGO in acquiring new resources and sharing their learning by teaching others.  Also at that point in time, we will be poised to scale up globally.
